But at our son's tech-free school, there isn't so much as a smart board — and that's just the way we like it. We let our kids use screens at home, but they don't overindulgeLike most Waldorf schools, Otto Specht suggests limited media exposure at home. But in our house, our kids have free rein when it comes to screen time. AdvertisementSome people argue that it's necessary to introduce kids to technology because it makes them "workplace-ready." In the meantime, let's let kids be kids.

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Cami Ostman, a 56-year-old writer and writing coach from Shoreline, Washington. She wasn't going to do anything with the land, so she said I could have it. I can think of seven friends in my age range who've bought off-grid land or purchased sprinter vans or RVs. In Seattle, I'm accountable to my students and employees, but when I'm on my land, I leave my work behind. There's nothing I miss when I'm in the yurt — it's so ridiculously peaceful.

I go to a café every day instead of working from homeFor as long as I've worked from home, I've rarely worked from my actual house. That's where my writers group comes in. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe members of my writing group are like coworkers, only better because it's a chosen circle of professionals. I'm a part of a lot of virtual communitiesIn addition to my WhatsApp group, I'm active in a handful of other online groups. I've never met some of the people I've worked with — I haven't so much as heard some of their names spoken aloud — but I've watched their careers evolve, as I imagine they've witnessed mine.

Melissa Petro is a freelance writer, writing instructor, and author in New York City. Days after my story was publicized, my writer friends and other industry folks begrudgingly congratulated me on my presumably imminent book deal. It took about two years to write the book proposal, and I wrote the book in about nine months. She was a Facebook friend of mine whom I saw left her job as a book editor to become a literary agent, so I reached out to her. After working with her to craft my book proposal that ultimately sold, it was a different book — a better one.

Even though I work hard to keep my physical fitness a priority, I'm a smaller person. But in the beginning, I pushed myself and worked especially hard for the same opportunities more readily given to men. As a volunteer, the job responsibilities are the same as a paid deputy fire chief. Being a firefighter takes a lot of hard work and hard hoursBut all of that effort you put in makes it that much more rewarding. He's been a volunteer firefighter for 23 years, and he got hired to a full-time career position almost 18 years ago (so he is a paid firefighter as a day job and a volunteer firefighter on his days off).

Thompson hates when people call her a fireman, because "gender doesn't matter" when saving lives. I got to visit her fire department, as well as the fire school, and this experience sparked an interest in volunteer firefighting. When I first joined the fire service, an acquaintance joked: "I'm surprised they let women join the fire service. People will sometimes refer to me as a 'fireman,' which I absolutely hate"I'm not a fireman," I say in response. I've done a lot of training, and I've had to work extremely hard to get where I am today.

Lindsey Peruto is a construction project manager in Philadelphia. She's had men comment on her looks and say she belongs in the kitchen, but that hasn't stopped her. It's an important role, and workers often comment and act surprised at "how well I know my stuff," which presumes that women don't know much about construction. I had a male coworker who would constantly interrupt my meetings and try to take over — again, as if women don't know as much as men. It's not a typical office job, and while it can be stressful, it's very exciting and far from mundane.
Five people share how they pivoted from the career paths they were on to pursue their dream jobs. We also teach this community to lobby legislators who ran campaigns on promises made to Black women and Black working class families. My favorite thing about this job is being able to work with women who don't see themselves as politically involved. She's homeschooling her son as their district can't find a public school to meet his special needs. As a child with a disability, he's entitled to services that will support and help him succeed in school. The good news: I found a private school for kids with special needs and they have an immediate opening. Do I put it on a credit card, hire a lawyer, and sue my public school district for reimbursement? I don't have a full-time "job," but I'm literally doing the job of a hundred different people.
